Six days into what should be the greatest two months of my life, and it’s turned into a nightmare.

I don’t even know who’ll read this. I guess someone will find it eventually. Maybe a hundred years from now.

For the record… I didn’t die on Sol 6. Certainly the rest of the crew thought I did, and I can’t blame them. Maybe there’ll be a day of national mourning for me, and my Wikipedia page will say “Mark Watney is the only human being to have died on Mars”.

The Martian is a 369-page science-fiction novel. It is the story of an astronaut trying to survive after being left behind on Mars.



Film adaptation:

The Martian by Ridley Scott, starring Matt Damon (running time: 141 minutes).

Oral expression

Mark Watney has been rescued and is now reunited with his family. You will act out a scene in which Mark Watney discusses what happened and how he felt during his long ordeal on Mars. Act out the dialogue and film your performance (3 minutes maximum). The best videos will be shown during the Children’s Book Festival.


Written expression

Select a favorite scene from The Martian and create a comic strip for that scene or a graphic novel. The best comic strips or graphic novels will be displayed at La plage Verte during Cherbourg Children’s Books Festival.

The illustrations can be digitally or manually created. If so, the narrative and the monologues / dialogues can be extracted, adapted or inspired from Andy Weir’s text. The best plates will be displayed during the Children’s Book Festival.
